There are many Vietnam veterans who after the war era went on and became famous in their own ways. John McCain the son of a four star admiral went on to becoming the senator Arizona and a republican presidential candidate. In 2000 he ran for republican nomination which failed. 8 years after he won the republican nomination against democrat Barack Obama but lost the presidential election to Obama.
One of the most brave and most talented during and after the war Oliver Stone became most famous for his films about the war and tried to show how it was really like inside a vietnams soldiers eye. Before the war Oliver dropped out of Yale to become a English teacher in South Vietnam then dropped out of that and enrolled in the U.S. Army in the year 1967. After serving the 15th month tour of duty and sent home he went to New York city film school and became a famous director and earned him acadamy awards "Last Year in Viet Nam" (1971), and "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) etc.
As you can see many successful veterans have came out the war in a good way but some not so lucky some came out the way with health and mental issues. The source i use is very reliable and explains how many of our American veterans survived a horrible war.
